Exploring Perceptions of Deaf Persons for Recommendations towards Effective HIV/AIDS Programming in Nairobi

Purpose : To assess barriers encountered by Deaf persons from Nairobi’s informal settlements, such as language, in obtaining information and treatment services related to HIV AIDS. Method Upon completion of a literature review, consultation with Empowerment Kenya, two focus group discussions community members, quantitative questionnaire was designed administered 32 participants Dandora, Haruma Kayole. Results Although the results questionnaires represent small sample adults it offers important insight into perspectives context Future programming should continue be offered Kenyan Sign Language (KSL), community’s primary language - whether through seminars interpreters lecturers, Voluntary Counseling Testing (VCT) testing counseling KSL, or new innovation: educational videos actors. Written materials complementary not means an end, supplemented clear illustrations. Conclusions It is recommended that are empowered involved development learning suit their unique needs, create sense ownership future education, treatment, care support programs.
